Letter of Recommendation

May 11, 2026

To Whom It May Concern,

It is my pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for Elan Martinez. I have had the privilege of being Elan’s teacher in both AP Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition. Throughout our time together, Elan has consistently demonstrated intellectual curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a genuine commitment to growth — both as a student and as a person.

Elan approaches the study of literature with a rare blend of enthusiasm and sensitivity. He is the kind of student who leans into complex texts and difficult conversations, eager to explore new perspectives and challenge his own assumptions. Whether analyzing the rhetorical strategies of a nonfiction essay or unpacking the thematic layers of a novel, Elan brings thoughtful insight and a willingness to engage deeply with the material.

One of Elan’s most admirable qualities is his growth mindset. Over the course of two years, I have watched him develop not only as a writer and thinker but also as a collaborator and leader in the classroom. He takes feedback seriously and applies it with intention. His writing has matured significantly — from clear and competent to nuanced and compelling.

Beyond academics, Elan contributes to the classroom community in meaningful ways. He listens actively, supports his peers, and is not afraid to take intellectual risks. He is respectful, kind, and consistently shows up ready to learn.

I am confident that Elan will thrive in a college environment. He is the type of student who will take full advantage of the opportunities available to him and contribute positively to whatever community he joins.

I wholeheartedly recommend Elan Martinez. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss his qualifications further.

Sincerely,

Gwen Larsen

Personal Reflection

April 4, 2026

Dear Scholarship Committee,

I am writing this reflection to support Elan Martinez, a young man I have had the pleasure of knowing through the Long Beach aquatics community. As a parent, teacher, actor, and advocate for youth aquatics, I have worked closely with many student-athletes over the years, and Elan stands out as someone whose character and initiative are genuinely exceptional.

One moment that captures who Elan is happened during a high school water polo event. Parents were taking turns volunteering at the snack shack — a common and often chaotic fundraising tradition. Elan noticed the snack shack was struggling. Without being asked, he stepped in to help organize the setup and even began suggesting improvements. He proposed a system for pre-orders and a simple menu layout that would reduce wait times and increase sales.

What struck me most was that he wasn’t doing it for recognition or for a grade. He saw a problem, had ideas, and acted on them. That entrepreneurial instinct — combined with genuine care for the team and community — is rare in someone his age.

Elan is respectful, hardworking, and deeply aware of the people around him. He treats younger players with patience and encouragement. He shows up consistently — not just physically, but with energy and intention. In a world that often rewards flash over substance, Elan is the real thing.

I believe Elan will carry these qualities into college and beyond. He deserves every opportunity to grow, and I am confident he will make the most of it.

With warm regards,
